Team Pedal 4 Pierce had a hot start to 2014.  Following a break after the fun and festivities of the JetBlack 24Hr at Mt Annan we kept up our riding on our home turf.  Stromlo Forest Park saw us the most as we took stock of a successful 2013 and knowing that raising an amazing $13,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation Australia meant that children and their families would once again be supported.

Our first race for 2014 was the Rocky Trail Entertainment AMB100 – this in fact was our very first race with Rocky Trail back in 2010 – at that time Chris and I rode the short but sweet 10km loop, which was the exact same course which saw Pedal 4 Pierce launched in 2009!  So this race holds a lot of memories for us both.

This year we challenged ourselves once again, Chris taking on the 66km (2 lap) challenge and Nigel tackling the 100 Miles (5 lap) challenge!  Our race really started the Wednesday prior…..

Huge thanks must go to the team at Onya Bike for supporting us both, and just in time for the race a new Giant Anthem Advanced 1 was built and delivered to Pedal 4 Pierce – this sweet ride is to be Nigel’s bike of choice for the year!  Chris went one step further and colour coded his ride with the Giant XTC Advanced 2 which matches his kit!

To put the icing on the cake we also were pleased to be advised that the team at Bike Corp would support us by supplying Maxxis Tyres for us both – not only for the mountain bikes but also the roadies!  We’re really pleased to have Gareth and the team from Bike Corp providing us with some superb rubber goodness.

After a quick (and smile making) ride on the new bike it was time to start getting ready….predicted temperatures of 39 degrees meant bottles needed to be frozen ready for Sundays race!  Thursday saw Chris smash out a sensational 2nd place in road crits whilst Nigel whipped up a frenzy on Stromlo’s sweet singletrack.  Both having big smiles on their faces to end a great day of riding.  Luckily for us Martin and Juliane from Rocky Trail made time to pop over for dinner and talk about what we can do for fundraising with them!

Saturday saw Chris’ XTC taken to Onya Bike for tyre fitting, the solid work horse Maxxis Ardent up front with the tried, tested and truly amazing Maxxis Crossmark rolling on the rear.  Our transition area for the race was setup prior to a good feed, plenty of water and an early night!  Nigel’s race to start at 5am.

Sunday morning was warm…..20 degrees at 5am…with the sound system setup and the lights on it was time to get on the starting line with some of the greats of long distance racing.

Nigel’s 100 Mile goal was just to finish, although the course was shortened to compensate for the high temperatures it was still a very tough 25Km loop, one which would feel more like 35Km’s each time.  The early start was awesome, lights on, then a Stromlo sunrise and all whilst riding your bike….you couldn’t ask for much more!  About two thirds into my second lap I was overtaken by two of the fastest riders around, Ed McDonald and Callum McNamara….boy can these guys ride….but I was sticking to my game plan!

By the time I was back and ready for my third lap the main field had left and I had about an hours lead on them so my 3rd lap was pretty much traffic free!  After completing a very slow 4th lap Nigel called it a day, it was 44 degrees is some parts of the track and although Nigel and the bike felt good, I couldn’t get enough fluids in.

At the Pedal 4 Pierce tent, Chris was there and very pleased with a 2nd place in the Junior category and his first comment was “man those tyres are awesome!” after the usual banter of who was fastest it was pretty clear there was only one winner…..Since the very first 10km race we’ve both come along way, so to has the Pedal 4 Pierce charity…..with several other riders wearing the colours on track its great to see the awareness and support from the cycling community grow.

So, a hot start to the year and we’re ready for our next Rocky Trail race, the Shimano Grand Prix at Awaba….but before then, there are commutes, rides with The Berm and of course the club events where the Pedal 4 Pierce kit by On The Go will be seen.
